PANTUG, short for the Philadelphia Area Network Technologies User Group has existed in one form or another since the mid 1990's. Originally called PANT, the Philadelphia Area NT Society, the group was founded as a special interest and certification training group for the newly emerging Windows NT operating system. The group was small and met in a meeting room in the Reohr Group's offices where the founders worked. The group grew to the point where it needed more space and moved to a meeting room at a hotel in King of Prussia and reached it's peak membership of 120 members, with 238 members on the mailing list. In 2000, the Reohr Group went out of business, thus ending their financial support of the group. In order to keep the group going the four then-current officers, formed an S-corporation so they could charge memberships and use those funds for meeting space, a web server, etc. This new group was briefly called the Philadelphia Area Windows Networking and Technology User Group. This ended within three months when the group received a cease and desist letter from Microsoft to stop using the word "Windows" in the title. Rather than fight a costly legal battle, it was decided to change the name and take the group in a more general direction. Since there were no other local groups that dealt with interoperability between systems and networks, it was decided to expand the group from simply Windows based systems to dealing with general corporate infrastructure. While the group is no longer an S-Corp, we do appriciate donations to help maintain the group. We continue to meet once a month, on the second Wednesday, in a room, graciously donated by ITT Tech in King of Prussia.
